Eden in Winter

By mlseawell
Utah welcomes everyone, whether the stranger or the most intimate of friends, you will be greeted by a wave or a smile. And the land has a similar attitude, stunning at any time of the year, whether the mountains of the north or the red canyons of the south. I love both but call the north my home and though the canyons seem to catch the world's attention with the national parks and a billion tourist (or so it seems) the north has its charms if you look.

And look I did, the last moments of November, the twilight season between season. But with the snow already on the Wasatch mountains, we brace for the inevitable snows in the valley and the hawking winds of the canyons in the early morning. But on this morning on the old Snowbasin, where vehicles are no longer allowed (thankfully) I made my way to a vantage point over looking the valley and the mountains. It has been unseasonably warm of late and perhaps this is why I was lulled into a false sense of security and neglected to bring my gloves! Foolish, and I know better, this is northern Utah and approaching December so of course, bitter cold greeted me as I walked the 10 minutes from my car and set up my tripod and waited, the memory of warm coffee quickly forgotten. Finally, a crack of pink light off to the east, I rubbed my hands to keep warm and perhaps in anticipation of the emerging light.

And emerge it did, first blues turning to a soft pink, lighting up the sky and touching the proud mountains, reflecting in the snow. It is for this I come, not a sound, not a person, just me and this eternal light and beautiful and forever...Eden in winter.
