Edinburgh Castle

By scorpion1946
Edinburgh Castle from St John's churchyard earlier this year.
Very little colour in the image, so B&W.

I really like this, it's a view that I know (that churchyard has some wonderfully macabre headstones), and b&w is perfect. The time of year when the world turns to mono.

Another thing that I like is the way the perspective works with the architecture - in the main building the upper floors are stepped out, so there's a fairy-tale look to the castle.

One regret, I'd like more space at the top, less at the sides, particularly the left. Let the viewer start exploring in the churchyard, but then direct the eye up to the castle, and give the castle space - it looks a bit cramped here, as though it's bumping against the ceiling.

Moira has covered this very well.

I too would like to see a little more room above the castle. It doesn't have to be as much as in Moira's mod if you don't want it too but some more sky is welcome.
In the same wy it's worht exploring different crops (don't feel you need to stick to the original frame's aspect ratio, sometimes a square crop can be really effective. Portrait format would also be good here.

That white patch on the nearest headstone is very annoying once noticed and is quite a distraction so that's another reason for a crop. Of course, if you like the framing you can always clone out such distractions. In some cases just a step one way or another is enough to avoid getting something like that in frame in the first place.

Mono gives a pleasing result here.

Yes, a little more height wont hurt.

I would love to see the original colour either way if you still have it, you can upload it right here by clicking modifications, then upload, and select the colour.

Ive also uploaded a mod with added height, more shadow detail in the lower area and a bit more contrast in the upper.

Sharpened a little overall. especially upper right, - the edge of the lens is slightly soft.

Well done.

Willies mod is the way it should be. In your original, the top part of the image is weak and the scene gives the common exposure problem of bright top, dark bottom. Willie corrects that. Mono suites.

I don't have much to add - maybe a step back, widest zoom setting, and crop square, with the bottom of the wall coming down to the bottom left corner of the frame?
