Wow, stunning! Don't suppose you can just lift the top from the background so you get a bit more outline can you?

Wow. I thought this was a good shot but looking at the large version...awesome. Not at all surprised to see a shot like this rewarded. Congrats on the EC!

Blimey! Thanks Pete and everyone Smile

The blouse wasn't so close to the background on the original, something always happens in upload - either light or darker, didn't check this before I went for a shower just hit upload and ... well I'm babbling, really chuffed - this was a great shoot and I hope I've got some images for Elle's portfolio.

Very nice K.

Stunning model - great pose and expression...
My only niggle is the fact that her top blends too much into the background but apart from that the rest of the clothing and shot is very exciting :O)

Hmm..not too sure about this. As Pete has already mentioned this would've benefited from the background being lit - honeycomb, snoot, acute angled direct light, etc.?
TBH I'm a little confused as I thought an EC was Pete's idea of a shot executed very well but, as he has already mentioned, this could have been done so much better had it been a little more considered regarding the lighting.
2 Aug 2006 9:44PM
Thanks for all the comments folks. As I've already mentioned the blouse was defined from the background in the original and on the one I edited, its only on upload that the definition was removed, why I don't know but on reflection I should have looked at it on upload. I'm sure you know that there are many reasons for Pete giving ECs, sorry you don't think this is worthy.

Hi K, superb lighting (as usual) welldeserving of the EC. Love the relaxed pose too. Glad to see Pete making a comment with the award. Paul

The point is that Pete thinks it is worthy of an EC.
From his own explanation on how an EC is chosen:

Quote: * Technical excellence
Includes photographs that are razor sharp, perfectly exposed, superbly composed, fantastically edited.
* Innovative
Includes photographs that are original, not run of the mill, different than the norm. Ones that make me think 'wow never seen that before!'
* Treatment of the subject matter
The way a particular subject is approached, shallow depth-of-field for a wild flower may do better than a front to back sharp meadow. A side profile of a fox may do better than a head on shot, a racing car panned is likely to work better than one that looks as though it's stood still etc.
* Creativity
Includes photographs that break rules, stand out for odd colours, interesting compositions, selective focus etc.
* Personal appeal to me for one reason or another.
Yes I do have a liking of certain styles. I think paintings by Salvador Dali and surrealists like him are fascinating. I find Bob Carlos Clarke's pictures highly erotic, I love the infrared work of Simon Marsden, I enjoy the still lifes of Irvin Penn, I admire the landscapes of Ansel Adams. As a youth I was often engrossed in books of birds of prey by Eric Hoskins. I could go on, and on, and on.
* Presentation
A badly framed or titled photo may lose mental points and a perfectly presented photo may gain points, but essentially it's the centre that counts.

So, IMO, it's down to personal appeal which justifies it as Pete's choice.
However, just because an image is awarded the much coveted EC award I don't think it should be exempt from critique or advice on which one could improve the image.

You're spoiling us again!! Another wonderful shot and a great compliment to the close crop from yesterday (?)

For what it's worth, I like the way the top blends into the background - it's what really attracted me in the thumbnail beyong recognising the model.

It focuses you on the model's eyes so it is like a face portrait but you are also able to see the rest of the body so it becomes 'full length' - you get the whole in one go. Sorry, I know what I mean!! Late and tired!

Excellent shot. I LIKE the top blending in with the background - it adds an extra dimension that keeps you looking at the picture. Well done on the EC.

Boyd, dont worry so much about it.
Some images dont need to be 100% to get an EC and others do, its the way it is.

My Lily picture wasnt worthy as the babies expression wasnt quite right, which obviously spoils all the innovation and originality. I think the more EC's you have under your belt the easier it is to get more.

Good stuff but I'm inclined agree with Pete that the top needs to be separated rather more from the background.

However if you were actually aiming at the opposite effect of blending the top into the background you could have got the model to put her arms behind her torso. The arms look just a little awkwardly placed here and "break up" the tartan skirt so to speak.

Anyway, I have uploaded a mod which I hope you will find helpful. Smile
