Escape from death.

This shot I think illustrates beautifully how a Mother is prepared to make the ultimate sacrifice to save Her family. She was merrily paddling across a lake with her chicks, when a Pike, attracted by all the tiny vibrations caused by all the paddling feet, attacked!! Fortunately it's initial lunge failed to connect, then all hell broke lose. The Mother grabbed Her trailing chick by the wing, and beat a retreat toward shore, drawing the Pike away from Her other chicks, the Pike made three more attempts to feed on Duck, almost suceeding on the last occaision, grabbing the Mother in an explosion of water. How She got free I do not know, but She did and so too did Her family. No doubt this is not a rare occurrance, but I think it is a rare sight I and I consider myself very lucky to have been photographing this little family just as the drama was unfolding. It all took about 10-15 seconds start to finish. I shall post all the shots showing the full sequence of events in the next few days.

This is brilliant and not only was you lucky but you were also skillul enough to capture the action at the right moment.
I have to take my hat off to you on this one. Surely its a photo of the month contender, if not the year.

Brilliant and thanks for taking the time to tell the story.
