European Paper Wasp - Polistes dominula

By Mendipman
Contrary to most of the images I take, this shot was taken in the midday sun whilst on holiday in Corfu last year.

Across the road from our villa there is a street lamp on its side. Inside the lamp part, a small colony of paper wasps lives, but on the stem of the lamp each day they all gather in a little gang in the full sun. The hotter it became the more of the wasps that gathered. I was able to get right up to them and take a few shots, fortunately they took no notice of me. This was probably the best as I was able to single out one individual directly facing the lens that stayed still just long enough to get a clear shot and I could stand the midday heat (36 degrees).

Best viewed large.

Many thanks for the votes and comments on the previous upload of the Striped Shieldbug and especially to Debs (frogs123), Mike (mike9005), Alan (Alan_Basely), Bill (richmowil) and Ken (franken) for your User Awards, so very much appreciated.
