Story-telling. That raised hoof, the implied curiosity, the two spikes of flowers standing accusingly.
I know it's not a donkey but I'm seeing an awful lot of Eeyore in this. (Shepard not Disney...)

Looks like he has all the time in the world to meander in those pastures.
Probably an old working horse put out to pasture and maybe doesn't have all the time in the world after all.
