Everything is Silent, Hervey Bay, Queensland

By BobinAus
Early in the night the Hervey Marina was already deserted but the lights had not been turned off. Rarely is the air so calm as it was that night.

Really this scene should have been captured as a panoramic stitch but I was worried that the lights would soon be turned off so I took a couple of single exposures first, just to be sure of getting the shot. That was all I had time for. Although the lights remained on the wind began to rise and unsettle the boats. Poor weather on the following nights spoiled any chance of repeating the exercise.

Thank you very much for the votes for and comments on my previous upload - the Aurora at Myvatn.

I like it very much, Bob. You've really captured the serenity of the moment; with most of the masts' reflections being remarkably sharp for a 30 second exposure. The monochromatic starkness of the boats against the black of the night is very effective. Cheers, Allan

Hello Allan, thanks very much for your kind comment. Yes, I was amazed at how still the boats were that night, especially after a stormy day out on the water. For an hour or so the weather was the most calm that I can recall in 30 years of visiting Hervey Bay for whale watching. I saw the opportunity as I was walking back to my accommodation from a restaurant then rushed to grab my camera gear from my room, hoping all the while that the lights would stay on and that the wind would not begin to stir. I guess I'll be waiting another 30 years to make that pano stitch! Wink Cheers, Bob

This picture is amazing, indeed! Almost only two colours, which do it all! Perfect for a wall-size poster of the yacht club! Smile
