Evil Eye

By RichardN00
The picture shows Dawn O'Brien performing at the Castle of Delights Hafla (Belly dance show) on 7th May in Nottingham.

Dawn mainly performs in the Tribal fusion style, if your only experience of Belly Dance is Arabic or Cabaret style as danced in resturants or holiday resorts then this can come as a bit of shock. Dawn was dancing to heavy rock (Hawkwind) and was dancing the part of a dancer possesed by 'The Slayer' an evil spirit.

The Hafla was held in the usual venue for these things, a slightly dingy back room of a pub with the usual problems with lighting, a mixture of incandecent, fluorecent and Disco lighting, the ceiling was too low to act as an effective bounce reflector so I used on camera flash with a diffuser.

Tweaked contrast and colour and cloned out an intrusive light fitting

Below is a potted bio of Dawn and a link to Wikipedias page on Tribal Fusion.

Dawn is a sought after instructor and performer of Belly Dance, she has performed and taught internationally and has been teaching Bellydance and Tribal Bellydance locally in Birmingham and Walsall since 2000.

Quite a raw atmosphere to the image, and I guess that's the essence of the dance coming through. Well captured! You're right about most people only experiencing the tourist (tease/fun) element of Belly Dance, the skill has so many facets, like every genera of dance. It's a pity its not better understood.
