Hi Paul,
I recognised this instantly when I saw the thumbnail. I used to live 400 metres from Seacombe Ferry, I now live less than a mile away!
The obvious angle to take this shot is the other side of the ferry terminal to get the famous Liverpool skyline in, from this angle it makes it far less abvious where is is (apart from the fact it tells you it is Seacombe). The terminal area is very brightly lit and there is a bit of burn out there - I know there is little you can do apart from shoot a little later (as it's morning) and reduce your exposure time. A slight trim off the sky may help a little.
Did you know the last 20 seconds of the new Ŗ15,000,000 Hovis advert was filmed in Seacombe (along the Promenade), Wilson Road, Elmswood Road and Falkland Road? You do now! link
From 1:41 to 2:02 is all filmed in Wallasey (my home town). I'm Wallasey Born and Bread! (Bread/Hovis do you get it!)

Cheers all for your time and feedback.
Andrew, firstly a big groan for that attempt at humour
... cheers for your time and considered opinion too, but there's actually very little burn out at all on the ferry and terminal. There are a few pure white pixels in there but not that much TBH ... pity you don't have access to the full size version to see the detail that's been held in there. Anyway, at the end of the day, it's a white ferry with bright light on it, so it's going to look blown against the dark bgnd and doesn't worry me unduly.
Fair comment about the crop, I umm'd and ahh'd over it, and decided to keep the full frame ... it may get a more severe crop in future
I knew the Hovis advert was filmed in and around Liverpool, but wasn't too sure of the many locations used, cheers for the insight
Les, I went to go and shoot HMS Illustrious moored at the Pier Head, but she wasn't really that well lit up and after I took a couple, they decided to turn the lights off the clocks on the Liver Buildings ... so I cut my losses and headed for a nice jaunt to Perch Rock [I can hear the groans from here]

To be honest mate, it's the first time I've ever been down to the waterfront here to shoot the skyline or the terminals.
Yeah, I suppose HDR would've stopped it looking blown out Martin, but it would've simply made that area simply look grey. As mentioned though, it's bright light on a white paint job ... so it's going to look, yup, you guessed it ... white
Enjoy the rest of your weekend,
Paul

sorry - those incredibly bright lights compared to the rest of the scene are blown and therefore this shot is only worthy of the bin
(note to anyone reading this - this is a tongue in cheek comment relating to a thread in the forums about burn out in shots and how people on EPZ stupidly assume that anything that has a burn out, even with the sun, is technically flawed and should be binned)
Anyway - as Richard would say, nice details and ones in this

Quote:Quote:and you wanna see the size of my weetabix... is that a Euphemism???

Just being honest!!...

As for the 'blown' bits, well if we want to be technically correct, any image that doesn't have them should be binned! after all a 'technically correct' image should have curves reading from 0-100 and anyone who says otherwise, well you're wrong.
However, photography is about aesthetics and I personally think that 'blown' areas can make an image on occasions whilst on others it just plain ruins it. In this image the highlights are perfect, so I don't really see the problem myself. It is what it is and it works well here.
Oh, and Ade, well said.
Ian

Cheers guys ... yes, even you Dave
Hope you're all having a great weekend ... yes, even you Dave
Cheers for that Ian, but I'm not worrying about them at all ... funnily enough, by the same token I'm surprise that nobody has mentioned how black the shadows look or that there's very little detail under the main structure to the left, it seems that in this day and age that because we can resolve soooo much detail [if required] using software that we should do it every time.
Next time I go, I'm gonna cut one of my filters down to a Seacombe Ferry shape to try and hold the highlights back even more LOL
