Baz, just a thought..have you attempted tone mapping images, I'd give this my 3D treatment if it was my shot, brings out texture, colours and gives a layered effect.

Its all about light and shadows, nice one. Hopefully John will expand upon his 3D treatment but he may be referring to tone mapping in Photomatix?
