Female Great Spotted Woodpecker (Dendrocopos major)

By teocali
A full frame capture of a female GSW (Dendrocopos major) taken in the garden the other day. She chose to perch in an unfortunate position and is therefore up for mods to see if anybody could successfully remove the diagonal branch - or perhaps it doesn't detract? Would be interested to hear your views.
The red background is provided by the now denuded red acer shrub.

My thanks to you all for your C&Cs on yesterday's Robin upload, with a big THANK YOU to Luke (lukeparkinson) for his UA and to Carol(CarolG) for her UA on "Butter wouldn't melt" and to Dave(JohnJo) for his UA on "Autumn Goldfinch" - really brightened up my week and greatly appreciated Smile

Blimey this is a cracking close are so lucky to have her drop in to your garden.

Unfortunate branch yes but I would leave it ...mainly because I would not even attempt to remove

Love all the ruffled looks so much more natural.

I'm sure there are some PS wizards out there that could remove the branch - but why bother - excellent capture Sylvia.

A beautiful capture.
An unusually colourful b/g but sets
the bird off well.
I would love to see one so clearly in my area.

I have to agree with this Sylvia-. IMO the branch causes no problem at all and in my view it adds to the natural feel of the image. Top shot.Grin

I could get rid of that branch using Photoshop but why would I want to? It is an image of a beautiful bird in its natural setting and that includes the branch - a wonderful image.

I think the branch helps as there is something there which has captured the woodies attention. It in no way detracts from a perfect shot. As Maiwand suggested it actually adds to the natural feel which is sometimes lost with too much photoshopping. Brilliant image

It's a beautiful image as it is Sylvia, I personally don't see any reason to remove the branch Wink

A superb female woody, the exposure is quite exceptional. Have to agree with the others the branch doesn't appear to be a problem, all part of what is a superb capture.

A truly marvellous shot, Sylvia: I don't find the diagonal branch a detraction in any way.
Once again that acer is providing such an excellent backdrop contrast.
The colours in the plumage and the detail are superb.

A fantastic shot. I can see that you might wish the branch hadn't been there, but, eh, it is and it doesn't spoil an excellent image. Leave it.

Fabulous colour - great detail in the whites Sylvia. I don't mind the branch personally.
Nearly a good mod - but cloning repeats on the log and by the side of the GSW tail. Best left alone I think.Smile
