Have you ever tried using flash at the same time as a long exposure? It may have given a little more detail in the shape of the man's body, while still preserving the sense of movement and the light trail. My EOS 30e did it automatically when you fitted an external flash and set it on Av or Tv mode. Night time mode I think does a similar thing.
You can see how I somewhat imperfectly used the technique to create my 'LSD' image, on the last page of my portfolio. I'm not fishing for clicks, it only has 2, and I doubt one more every 6 months will get me a readers choice!
