Flamingo Juvenile

By Mike_Smith
Thank You to Caziwinkles ( Carol ) for giving me her User Award on my previous picture, also thanks to everyone else who gave me C & C's.
Today i have a quite young Chilean Flamingo, he is one of 24 that were hatched in an incubator and hand reared at the wetlands. I just happened to be around in December when they brought them outside, difficult to photograph as they were huddled together in a pen.
Standing as tall as five feet, Chilean flamingo adults can be as heavy as 16 pounds. The neck is long as are the legs, and the bird has pink feathers with black wings. The bird's bill is large and shaped like a banana. The Chilean flamingo's hearing is acute but its sense of smell is poorly developed. The bird can live as long as 50 years in rare instances, but 20 to 30 years is the average life expectancy. The Chilean flamingo dines on such creatures as frogs, small fish, seeds, and the algae that lives in lakes and marshes. These birds filter their food through their beaks, which acts almost like a strainer, before swallowing it.

he is cute, a bit of a Roman nose (sorry beak). I have never seen a juvenile and it somewhat surprised me to see the colour.
