Florencia Bay, Uclulet, Vancouver Island, BC, Canada

By RamblerPhotography
Summer 2014 at Vancouver Island

Vancouver Island is one of the best place in Canada for landscape photography, but you have to be patient at the point to bring with you a 5000 pieces puzzle for passing the time until the sun show up true the fog in the morning. Yes, almost each morning, the Pacific wind bring to the West coast of Vancouver Island a cloudy fog so thick that you canít even see in front of you, itís like to be in a sauna, but cold, and this fog penetrate your clothes and freeze you up until you have teethes shaking if donít move sometime or not have the proper clothes. In this picture, I was waiting for the sun to show up on Florencia Bay, and it was my first time on this beach, and did not do any research in town about it. So, I arrived at the beach around 8h00 AM, and I am waiting, waiting and waiting for two hours until I turn my back to the beach and see the sun passing true the fog, and lights the corner of the beach with sunrays. The only foreground that I found was this lonely rock surround by water and a luxuriant rain forest, who did a wonderful job to show the morning mood at the wonderful, but hard to shoot, Florencia Bay.

Tip of the day

Shooting in the Rain Forest

The sentence tell the truth, it is wet in the Rain Forest, very wet, even when it is not raining the humidity can reach 100% easily with the thick fog, and what can we do about it?

1-Always have multiple layers of clothes for having layer of air for a better ventilation, cotton is not the good one, it will keep the humidity inside the rain cover, and you will freeze to death in two hour, or have a hypothermia crisis if you donít drink a lot of water, and how to know if you start a hypothermia crisis: you start shaking, you faceís skin is white and you are confuse and weak, drink water each thirty minute when you are wearing a rain gear.
2-Always carry a full body rain gear, even if it sunny, you never know when you be under a rain shower in a Rain Forest.
3-Always have rubber boots or very expensive climbing certified waterproof boots with rain cover.
4-Always cover you camera with a rain cover, even if it not raining because the fog will get true your camera and lenses, especially if you are pumping the zoom of your lens more often than usual.
5-Move, look around all the time, you never know where the scenery will appear, and you will keep warm also by doing this, and will not give up after one hour.
6- You need patience; a lot of it, but you will be reward with extraordinary pictures to share and sale.
7- Walk the trail or beach before your shooting session, and found out the best spot at good light, because in the fog, you will not found it when it will be the right time for your composition.
