Flowers of Spring #2

May aunt who lives about a mile away, and at 94 is still a prodigious gardener gave me this primrose last year....and while I have planted many grocery store primroses that are not hardy and never come back...this one, as she assured me, did Quite delicate and with a long stem. Just got off a Zoom meeting...time to make dinner and one of the other glories of spring.....RHUBARB. I just made the first harvest before mii meeting....need to get rid of those pesky leaves....and i make rhubarb (and strawberry) sauce. Cut the stems to about 4-6" put a very small amount of water in the bottom of the pot, cut in the strawberries....and cook at a very low flame till it becomes soft. Take off the flame and add just enough sugar to make it ok to eat....keeping that delicious sourness. Know most people make rhubarb pie....in my family growing up it has always been rhubarb sauce. Some years ago, visiting the Shaker Village in Sabbathday Lake, Maine i got into a rhubarb recipe discussion with my friend Brother Arnold...and he gave me another recipe. Their livelihood, now and since the 1790s has been their apples...and they have, as he said, apple pie for breakfast every day. His rhubarb recipe (and their patch was much larger than mine) when you get tired of rhubarb sauce, is blend it and freeze it. You have rhubarb sorbet. Really good.

I would like to thank Dora, Walt and Ian for their valued UA's yesterday....I will get back to looking after dinner.

Peter

Beautiful set Peter,
Fred.
I was maybe in my 20's when I got to know "Gram" Jodrey - no relation but everyone called her Gram. The first gift of spring was always rhubarb and everyone was bringing Gram rhubarb. She was gracious and thanked them and then handed it off to me. That year I made rhubarb everything. I was also into baking beans and one day I sent my husband (Now ex- husband, so I enjoy this memory very much) off to school, (he was a math teacher) with a lunch of baked beans and rhubarb pie for dessert.

Apparently he did not have a very pleasant afternoon. Nor did his students.
