hello and a happy new year,

nice composition and a nicely handled mono conversion.

maybe a little more space around the gateway would have been nice and it would additionally allowed you to have the space to straighten the verticals a little. although the convergance dosnt bother me, some would prefer verticals to be true.

i like the pool of light holding attention within the archway, but the white area behind the tree on the right is a little distracting and id suggest burning in the highlight on a low opacity to take the brightness off.

when you post to the critique gallery, it would really be helpfull if you would suggest which areas we could help you with.

best regards.

happy new year

thank you Grin , sorry about that, i had forgotten to put that in, i just wanted to see if there was anything i could improve for next time and anything that i could watch out for such as the lighting on the right behind the tree.

Hi Amy and happy New Year from me too.
Phil's pretty much summed up the composition and mentioned the verticals. Personally, I almost never correct them as I always think that the corrected version looks "wrong" but some people will always to pull them into place.
This looks very dark to me (apologies if that was your intention) so I've applied a tweak using "levels", I just pulled the right hand slider in until it met the fat part of the histogram and applied the "shadows/highlights" tool. I didn't make any adjustments, the settings are the default ones.
I also quickly cloned the white patch around the top of the tower.
Please see my mod.
Hope this helps.

A dece3nt image. Bren mentions brightening and I think that would help. You don't tell us, are you converting to mono with software or using the camera mono setting. It is almost always best to shoot in colour, converting with the channel mixer later. However, there is nothing much wrong with what you have done. I, too, would leave the verticals alone.

thankyou bren and paul,

The intention of the photo was too be a bit dark to give it a gritty feel however i really do like the modification, thankyou because that has helped a lot Grin

i did convert it too mono on the photoshop software, i didn't use the camera software as i have already been told to take the photos in colour then convert it.
