To be honest I prefer your B&W version anyway, which is quite impactful
Difficult working with a smallish colour jpeg, but I mainly pulled the blacks a bit and pushed the whites and some colours (red, blue, yellow)
Played a little with the shadows but also pulled the highlights to reduce the exposure on the girls' faces
Added a little sharpening also

The mono is good, - solid blacks, little or no noise.

Mono is about the faces, they rather get lost in all that blueness in the colour version. But partly the difference is down to the processing, you have reduced brightness in the mono version, revealing a lot more detail in those faces.

I would like to see the front of the boat, a bit more space. This does look cramped.

The challenge is to get more tone in the sweaters, I'd say, in mono, without losing detail in the faces.

I've had a go, but not all that successfully...

I am not a critique person---but

If this is about the faces is has to be your mono

However, for me---the paddles got lost in the darkness ---

Well suited to b&w. Added a little more space and processed in camera raw for highlights and shadows.

I am in agreement with the majority here, mono as the detail in the faces is much better, however you mono version is very contrasty, but just need lightening a touch to bring out the paddles and the jackets of the rowers.
A very cramped frame, I would have liked to have seen all of the boat and much more space at the sides.
Thanks for Crits and comment

Hi amigo.

Mono or colour is a pseudo-dilemma for this picture. It shifted the critique onto the "what came first the chicken or the egg?" question which is answered in the Bible. And the Torah.

Say, now the mystery is solved (pick any colour options, both are valid) one fundamental question puzzles me: Is the picture sharp where it should be expected to be?

Which is the sharpest face of all? Is f/4.5 the correct aperture value which captures the whole crew correctly? Never mind the sharpness of the paddles, let them have some blur to convey motion. I think you should have opted for an aperture equal to 8 or higher to get all of the faces front to back sharp.

Out of both versions I'd take the colour version.

Happy Holiday
