Framwellgate Arches

By woolybill1
Reflections in the River Wear in Durham. Inverted, of course.
Hearty thanks for all v/v/c yesterday. A wonderful reception, much appreciated.

Historical note: This is the second bridge at this location, replacing one 'broken by a flood during the Festival of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary in 1400'. It is of course Grade 1 listed. Until 1969 it served as the main road from the west into the centre of the city.
Although two arches are now visible it seems likely that a third is concealed by more recent building on the riverside, a painting of 1799 by Thomas Girtin displaying a rounded Norman arch that may well have been the remains of the 12th-century original incorporated in the present structure.

A quarter cw turn and slight that would confuse me totally.

Blows the mind at first look until it suddenly dawned on me that it was an inversion.
Great composition Bill.

Well done, Bill. For a minute I thought I may have to go to 'Specsavers.'SmileWink

Whichever way I look at this, it works. Such a strong composition, with those sweeping arcs of stonework.

Turned through 90°clockwise creates an even weirder effect.

Bill: my photographic tip of the day...learn to take images standing on your head (perhaps with Moira holding you upright) and save all that extra processing work having to flip the image...Tongue

These reflections that you (and Moira) have been doing are just so damned good - they always initially make you think there is something wrong with your eyes because there is just a hint of distortion.
They are always beautifully composed and despite the distortion, as sharp as a tack.
Anyone who has tried this will know just how hard it is to get everything to come together like this.

On first viewing the quality of the mono tones is an eye-opener and then you have to work out it is an inversion and not your eyes playing tricks. Well composed and presented, Bill.

Excellent bit of flipping Bill. A superb image either way. I like Malc's idea but I think I
can offer a slightly less strenuous solution. Just turn the camera downsideup. SmileSmile
