Yep, they're frozen Grin

Good shutter speed choice, actually - fast enough to freeze the movement, yet there's a couple of grains that are showing movement blur which is great, because that really contributes to the sense of motion.

I love how I can see the guy's expression through the grain, too. I'm not overly keen on that pile of grain to his left at the bottom, or the grey tarpaulin (?) on the lower right hand side, but they do give the context to the man's action so ...

The harsh shadows you probably couldn't do a lot about, given the time of day. I might have a quick go at a mod where I try and shift the balance of light and shadow and if it works out, I'll post it above under the Modifications tab.

Okay, mod added. I'm not sure it adds anything to your original image above, but it's an alternative Smile
I love the way the grain is almost three-dimensional ... a very cool effect!

Whats a fantastic shot, you should be proud of this.

A few comments that I think will make a difference. Crop severely to exclude all but the man and the rice; increase exposure, - its quite a bit underexposed; at the time of shooting, it would have required the same shutter, but either a wider aperture if it was available, or a higher ISO, and the speed is perfect.

Mod uploaded to show what I mean.

I think the original is great as it also shows the environment in which he is working and the timing of the shot is excellent.

This is very well done. You have frozen all of that rice in mid air.

It's also the man's expression that makes the image, his happy face, and the fact that we can see that through all the grains of rice.
I don't know if there is a purpose to his tossing the rice, or if he did it for fun, but it certainly makes an engaging image.

There is very little on the left side of your frame that is of interest, so crop it away and focus all attention on the man and the rice.

A brilliant shot! This would get votes in the main gallery, and possibly a lot of them.

Both crops work, and so does the original. They merely alter the compositional balance, and emphasise different areas.

The content is excellent but you are a long way under exposed and that rather spoils things for me. A much tighter crop, as Willie suggests and correct exposure. In order to retain 1/500 you need to increase the ISO to at least giving you two more stops to play with.

I might have tried a slightly lower shutter speed to synch with a flash fill. The flash would brighten thing up, balancing the shadows and the effect may have been rather good. When you come upon a great subjects, try lots of variations to technique.
