Fresco on Fresco

By GwailoAngMo
Here is a fresco on top of a fresco. On the right it seems to be the Annunciation, and adjacent in the centre an enthroned Christ. On the left hand side there is a more recent but heavily damaged fresco of God holding a crucifix, an image I cannot recall seeing before.

An unusual image Tim. I suppose they used re-used the wall?

I imagine it was easier to slap on some new plaster and paint on that than to remove the old and replace it. I'm assuming that merely painting over was not going to provide a long term solution either. I find it so infuriating that things like this seldom, if ever, warrant and entry in guide books. I want to know the story!
