Friday the 13th.

By JimV
This shot of a yacht going past the lighthouse on Georges Island was taken from Pier 21, which was the landing place in Canada for 1.5 million immigrants and war brides, it has recently been restored and now serves as a museum recording the history of the place, very interesting and well worth a visit.
Georges Island is a National Historic Site, it was an important military installation for over two hundred years, due to its strategic location at the harbour entrance. For anyone interested there are good write ups on Google.
Some of you may have already noticed the pall of smoke behind the island. This was a big forest fire which started that day in the Porters Lake/Lake Echo area just east of Dartmouth. It took two or three days before it was under control, no lives were lost, but two houses were and aerial photos on TV showed the fire line was right up to the back garden of many houses, sheds and garages were destroyed but the houses were saved. So Friday the 13th. was unlucky for two families but lucky for many others.
V2 is another view of the fire from the Halifax ferry.

Hi Jim
I'm very glad that you always write full descriptions for your photos. In combination with excellent pictures, they create a better understanding of your choice to photograph this area.
Moreover, I guess, you feel responsible for not only entertaining a viewer, but educating her as well.
Thanks for the good work!
Respectfully

That looks like some pretty acrid smoke Jim. I really didn't realize it until I clicked on v2, where it is evident that it is smoke. Looking at v1 and the white-caps, I could almost smell the salt air!
So, you had your Pier 21, and in NY there is Ellis Island, but were there any similarities with the way the immigrants were processed for lack of a better word.
We passed Ellis Island on a trip in the bay when we were in NY in 2001, and I couldn't help think of my grandfather who came through there several times in the 20's.
