Frozen Trees, Capel Curig.

By WelshKiwi
This was a grab shot,

I was driving past the usual lookout point at Llynnau Mymbyr (Capel Curig) curisng that I didnt have my camera with me (again) and then I remembered I had my compact in the glovebox.

When I got home and put it on my computer, I only had elements 5 then and didnt have a clue what to do or how to use it.

So (Im gonna regret this I just know it) I pressed the Auto Fix Button.

This is what it came up with.

Im running out of work to upload, Im going to have to make a concentrated effort to get out on my days off.

Thanks for looking everyone. As usual, your comments will be listened to.

The noise that's present makes it look like a painting rather than a photo. The trees dont look real. I like it all the same though and it's composed well. Nice reflections.

Im not sure but I think the noise what you can see is actually the mist.

But, yes, it could be me doing something wrong....... Smile

Thanks for all your comments everyone.

While not an image to grab the attention, I think it is a rather pleasing photo. While there is nothing wrong with having a horizon bang in the middle, If it were mine I would be tempted to crop out some of the reflection, as the bottom left keeps catching my eye Smile

I agree with Martin about the crop, Lee.

Is that me by the tree?? Wink
Did you take this last year when it was all chilly?

Thought it was about time to see what Lee's been posting - mwahmwah

OK, firstly I would agree that there is some colour noise, particularly in the reflection. However, the autofix may have accentuated this, so we will overlook this for now.

Compositionally there are at least two other shots in this image. Cropping a 1/5th approx from either top or bottom gives a different emphasis, but both highlight the frosted trees more.

The half and half composition at the moment is just lacking that WOW factor.

I'd certainly recommended reprocessing the image and taking your time. Firstly I would check the levels tab and make sure we are seeing the purest white of the frost (without blowing it out). So bring the white slider in to meet the start of the histogram at the rhs. This will perk up the whites and give them more prominence.

After that I would look at the colour temperature and maybe bring it down to around 5000k or less as this will give the image a colder feel, that will sit better with the tone. At the moment it looks a bit on the warm side in the greens and particularly the earth on the bank.

Have fun!

This is MY challenge that has been set for me to do in Roll Call on Wed 30th April. I have until Monday to learn what the heck Cheryl is talking about and to do as the instructions tell me.

Thank You Cheryl. Smile

Well 'seen' Lee. A slightly tighter lateral crop (lose some off the top and bottom), increase the contrast and you'll be there.

Like it - and your style!! Keep 'em coming. Grin

I was going to post a mod, but it is almost the same as Mike Otley's, crop it in tight, adjust levels a bit, even put a gentel curve on, and adjut saturation.

You just couldn't miss this one could you.
Is it possible for you to post the original shot, un-processed, for comparison?Smile
Looked good, even from the thumbnail.
It must have been so frustrating to have those wonderful trees and not to be able to use N) 1 camera bu you've done a great job with what was available.

Being a viewpoint passed regularly I would be tempted to watch this scene through the seasons.
The reflections clinch this.
