World of Wing's Ruppel's Griffin Vulture. Taken during his display. Lots of gasps and ooohs from the viewers as he flew up from the field, his 10ft span wings close above our heads, landing just a few feet from me! I wasn't going to miss the opportunity and never gave a thought to the fact that his beak was designed to tear flesh to bits!
These vultures are the highest flying birds in the world, generally around 10,000ft, though a height of 36,000 has been recorded.
Three years ago Gandalf 'escaped' during one of his displays; was missing for nearly a week; caused a great panic and aircraft alerts. Luckily he was reported seen, perched on a building near Falkirk! Obviously very hungry; his handler coaxed him down to a nearby field with some food and he was taken home safely, none-the-worse after his 'adventure' !
