garden pest!

By CarolG
A not so cute clanger, one of the vine weevils, an evil little bu*ger! They are very strange when handled, they go rigid, with their legs stretched out, and play dead for about 10 minutes. This one couldn’t get out of the empty pool by himself, so I picked him up, whereupon he immediately went rigid, so I laid him on a twig and left him alone for a while, until he decided danger was past and he ‘un-froze’ himself. He was then quite willing to attend a photo shoot before being dispatched into the conifer tree. I should really have disposed of him underfoot, they do no amount of damage to the garden, but I couldn’t bring myself to do that after he had been so obliging for the camera!

I really like versions 1 and 2, lots of lovely details, but I don't think I would have kept version 3 as a lot of it is out of focus. He looks quite chunky and armoured instead of your usual 'knitted' versions! Smile

V2 for me today, great shot of this nightmare of the garden.
Opened a cupboard in our house once to be confronted by thousands of Weevils, they came from a bag of bird seed. We were finding them all over the house for weeks after.

Hi Carol you are right vine weevils are an absolute pest gnoshing holes in flowers and leaves. One thing worse is the grub which eats the roots and silently destroys plants and bulbs.
Like lily beetles if disturbed they fall to the ground on their backs the outline being broken.
I am afraid to say I kill them at the first opportunity.
