Gemma and Co

By mrswoolybill
This was an interesting exercise. A little while before Lockdown Mk 2, our local Youth Project volunteers wanted some photos for publicity.
We agreed that we needed at least an indication of social distancing. Now I have seen a lot of socially distanced group photos in the local paper, all seemingly saying 'We're not talking to each other'... But this was all about inclusiveness, community, a warm welcome.
The volunteers wanted a recognisable local setting, we settled on The Wave, a wood and perspex art work (I use the term loosely) in the town centre. They could only meet after work, we had around ten minutes reasonable light before evening set in. I said this was interesting...
I took two sets. The main upload is about Gemma as team leader, I placed the other two diagonally a little way apart, and hoped that differential focus would convey distancing. The other pictures are about the team, three different personalities who balance each other very successfully.
I was pleased that they were receptive to b&w. And I was pleased to get back to something vaguely approaching normal activity, if only for ten minutes.
Thanks for looking, and reading,
Moira

My award for your lead image, Moira.
V1 and V2 work well too and shows their faces nicely but your lead, for me, is photographicly, the winner.

Time and time again your work epitomises "a picture is worth a thousand words" ,
Unlike John I am not qualified to judge any image photographically but if I was in the situation of reading such publicity the sincerity and warmth shown would convince me to go farther.
All expressed rather inadequately but bluntly I think this is "bloody good set of images"
Thank you Ma'am

The main image works really well as the focus of the people gives the distant you were looking for in the image. Great job..

The other two are great images but they look a little too close.

A superb set, Moira. I think you have succeeded in what you wanted to achieve. The lead image is particularly successful imho.

Spot on. She did ask me if I could do some skin smoothing there, I said I could but explained why I wouldn't...

Thanks Peter!

This was very much a compromise.
Incidentally I checked back, all the photos were taken within six minutes. The first few minutes were the preliminaries. I can work fast when I have to, the street was in darkness very shortly afterwards.

The most important bit for your project here is the badge on her sweatshirt.
Your lead has less bg distractions therefore concentrating the viewers eye on the matter in hand.
Nicely done Moira.

Back to (in the good sense) some old-fashioned photography, where it is the people we are showing and not the surroundings! Their friendliness shines through in your images, Moira.

A fine trio of images of this trio, Moira, each worthy of its own upload, but as a set, have to go for the lead as my fave 😃👍

Gemma is really popping out of the shot in the first image, so your focusing technique has work very well.

Gemma is actually smiling with her eyes, so obviously genuinely enjoying herself - the other two not so. They may well be having as good a time as Gemma, it's just not showing in their eyes as it is with her. But that's not something you, the photographer, can control. I would imagine they were very pleased with the results.

Interesting comment, Malc. Gemma is the communicator, a natural leader, much more relaxed and at ease than the other two.
Thanks folks.
