Getting High..

By WhiteRose1
I love to gaze at sunsets,
At the fading of each day.
As the clouds on the horizon,
For the evening pave the way.

Sundown from 244 metres, on the viewing platform of The Shard in London. The horizon is about 40 miles away at this height. Not the cheapest tourist attraction in London but, boy, is it spectacular. This view is looking West, you can see Tate Modern, St Paul's Cathedral, BT Tower, Millennium Bridge to name but a few.

You were blessed with that dawn Dave! I used to work on the 22nd floor of an office in the City and we had a fine view looking west, but this even surpasses. It would be fun to go on a misty morning to see if you can see the tall office blocks poking through the mist.
Great capture with magic view. Well done Dave.

A spectacular view from this already iconic building, and one I'd love to experience for myself.
But would I like a flat up there even if I could afford it, definitely not.......I'd get giddy every time I peeped outside.
But what a superb cityscape, Dave.

Great sharpness and contrast on the ground with so much detail, you chose a super time of day to go up. I love the way the bridges lead across the Thames and take the eye with them. St Paul's makes a great FP being so recognisable and also forms an interesting implied triagle with the BT tower and whatever that brown one is on the left. For my taste there is too much sky, it's so spectacular that it competes with the ground vista and it feels like an image of two halves. Did you take a landscape version with less sky? Would be interesting to see but even when I use my hand to crop this to a square I find it more satisfying to view. I'm sure plenty will disagree so it's probably just a personal thing and in no way detracts from the excellent technical quality of the image. Smile

No tripod, Ron, although I did see one or two people carrying lightweight tripods. Not sure what their official stance is. The problem using them are the reflections in the glass, with a tripod you'd be a little back from the glass and picking up lots of reflections. I was using my fleece jacket to block out most of them, holding camera in one hand, and editing out the odd stray which got through. Same reason I didn't manage any panoramas. Took about half a dozen decent ones in the end but will save up to go back for an evening session (nb... closes at 6pm Mon to Weds)

The vapour trail is central, and heading downwards, like the trail of a meteor hurtling down to earth. That's the detail that brings this alive to me. It suggests energy, movement.

Dave. one of your best. Could you recoup the cost by selling a couple. Fantastic kit combination. If you shoot against glass and don't won't reflections some stores do rubber lens hoods for most lens. Place the rubber against the glass and you can hold the camera with both hands up against the glass and protect your your lens. Have you tried the Eye or the wheel at Winter Wonderland in Hyde Park. Cheaper but lower.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New year
