Towards the end of last year we were in Bangkok and on this particular day it was Tricia’s birthday. We had taken a short journey on the skytrain to a very popular shopping outlet known as MBK. To our great surprise and delight the area outside this massive shopping complex was teeming with Thai youngsters respendent in very impressive fancy dress, who were all playing to the gallery of the growing number of spellbound spectators. Television cameras were there and a number of local professional photographers were also in evidence. We needed no second invitation to join in and went straight into the crowd to sample the atmosphere. The mood was absolutely electric; the youngsters were really having a ball, as evidenced by the squeals of delight and peals of laughter that punctuated the air at regular intervals. The young Thais made two farang oldies extremely welcome as we moved amongst them and some even posed for us, but for the most part I had to take shots as the opportunities presented themselves. Because of the congested nature of the event, there are few unimpaired backgrounds and cropping has had to be heavy in order to isolate the smiling faces from the crowd.
We still have no idea what the occasion was, but the youngsters had really gone to town on their costumes and make up and were having a wonderful time together. There was large stage set up on the corner and a popular Thai band was belting out their music at a high rate of decibels! What really impressed us was that with all this mayhem and excitement, there wasn’t the merest hint of trouble. Instead, the whole occasion was dominated by smiles, laughter and good-natured fun, or sanuk as it is known in Thai.
This series shows some of the youngsters in their costumes and the final two images show a section of the crowd watching the band – from a vantage point on a bridge above I homed in on two young girls in particular, both of whom were almost swooning in delight as they watched their idols perform.
I don’t know how the series will go down, but I wanted to share some images that conjure up wonderful recollections for us and that were part of what turned out for Tricia to be a memorable birthday.
