Goshawk Portrait

By csurry
Decided to upload in the order in which they probably should be seen following a comment by Dan. See below

This is a style of bird portrait that I like. These either tend to bomb on here or if they get an HC then they can scrape an RC

So make of it what you will, lack of votes won't stop me taking them as they look great printed large.

The OOF blur is caused by leaf litter.

forestnil
Great shot, especially like the dof on this.
Martin

culturedcanvas
I too like this style of shot .. on occasion .. but this one doesnt work for me at all. The dof is too distracting in this instance with not enough space for the head of the bird. Whilst it could create a sense of intimacy for me it fails as my attention is elsewhere ....

Dan

csurry
Probably needs a bit cropping off the bottom Dan.

Was really experimenting with the 51AF points during this and seeing if it helped getting the focus spot on the eye. Which it does, but it also complicates composition. There are just so many places to frame where good focus can still be achieved (when not using manual or focus-lock - neither of which was being tested here).

Will add another variation in a moment to see if that improves things.

Thanks

mohikan22
Certainly works for me but i do prefer number 2. has that little mroe "punch" to it.

matt.

Wil re-upload the other two versions as well.

Fair enough Matt.

Cheers guys!

Just to prove I can take criticism and act upon it. Hopefully it won't prove as embarrasing as last time Smile

prefer the crop of the second two, the third being my fave as the bright highlights are muted and therefore less distracting

I think this variations gallery is a bad idea Wink

I like No1.. then No2.. It all depends what you are thinking of. I agree (Cheryl) that some images may not look great here but work as a print. It's all about taste assuming the image ticks all the standard boxes,, ( in focus, well composed etc).
Also it depends if you like the subject matter.. I do so that gets me to click on the T/Nail..

Thanks everyone.

I think the initial idea of the shot using the leaves was a good one - mine Smile The Gos kept flopping down onto the floor and it looked good down there, if not better than on the branch it was supposed to be on. So on the old adage if you can't beat them...Why not take some pics in that position.

Probably would have cropped this at some point anyway, but I guess I'm a bit hung-up on what I was testing at the time of shooting with these D300 shots rather than the final image. Which is not a bad thing when you are testing a camera.

A first EC for the D300, is that a new record? A camera being awarded an EC before it is available in the shops Wink

Oh and apparently I have to make it known that it was Photography Monthly that lent me the camera Smile Which I had done in the forums, but for those that don't visit those dark pages.

An excellent shot Cheryl. I'm not keen on the second or third versions, but the first one is a stunner, the contrast between the soft, diffused surroundings and the pin-sharp head of the bird is superb.

That's a joke I presume.

Quote:To busy on the lower right hand corner for me nice detail in the eye

As I said, people either tend to love or hate these, usually I do them with less colour as the OOF foreground, but this was just a different take on it.

Quote:Super sharp- great format. No 1. For me it needs 10% reduction of blue to give the birds head a realistic colour.

You could be right, but like the previous ones was processed from the jpeg and I did no colour adjustment. Don't tend to mess with colour except in a RAW covertor.

no I was serious.. it's all blurred can,t you see that
csurry 13 9.2k 92
25 Nov 2007 8:55AM
Er yes, it's called a shallow DOF effect by using something that is too close to the lens to focus to create a diffused blur of colour. It has nothing to do with movement.
Excellent

Rather patronising response. I know what DOF is. You,ve just overdone it I feel. I didn,t say say it had anything to do with movement.

I have never seen an exclamation mark directly followed by a comma. An exclamation mark signifies the end of a sentence; much the same as a full stop. Before you start being placing so much importance on other people's grammar, be careful with your own. Everyone takes shortcuts with email.. I'm no exception.

You are starting to bore me now Smile
