Today's images were taken at the Black Country Living Museum in Dudley, 4 miles from where I live.

They all feature a blacksmith making chain at the museum's forge.

The lead image(which gave rise to the title!) and versions 1 to 3 were taken a couple of weeks ago.
Unfortunately, the sparks did not fly as I wanted them to ..... which is why I have included the final version taken 3 years ago ....... when they did!!

A party of school children watched the recent demonstration and were impressed when witnessing metal being heated to such high temperatures ......... something they would not see much of, if anything, in today's schools.
Forgework and metal casting were regular features and very much enjoyed by my pupils when I taught Metalwork(Design & Technology) in the 70s, 80s and 90s!
Children miss out on so much these days as the wonderful practical and arts subjects seem to be frowned upon!!

Many thanks for all votes, comments and treasured User Awards for my 'Yellow Irises' upload - very much appreciated, as always.

I hope your week has started well.

Great set of photos Richard!
Good work!

How right you are and itís great that the old traditions are being kept alive.

Good to see these old traditions demonstrated, always fascinating to watch a blacksmith. A wonderful set Richard, I especially like the lead as you have captured the concentration on the face so well.

a fine set, beautiful photography, and it only corroborates the argument that while learning from books or academics is the best way to learn, however you canít ride a bike from reading a book, no matter the number of books you read about cycling, you are still likely to fall off the first time you try!

Fabulous 😁

In a former life I remember having to measure a foundry, avoiding pots of molten metal being moved on overhead gantries... don't know how those men coped wit day in day out...real work!! 😁😁
Men at work. A fabulous set love the sparks in the last version. Debs

An excellent set Richard. The BCLM is a fascinating place, the blacksmiths forge
is a very popular exhibit and the demonstrations always attract a decent crowd.
Well worth a visit.

Excellent set

A smashing set, esp. V4, and it really makes me want to do more metal work; I had a year's evening class many many moons ago.
A cracking set of images Richard. Certainly V4 has a spectacular quality but I also find myself being drawn back to V1. For me it's just the right focal length for some arresting detail but far enough back to include context and allow the subject to 'breath'. I also like the motion blur on the hammer! I don't know how anything like this could be done in schools nowadays. In my latter years it required sheets of paperwork just to take a handful of students to watch a theatre performance. Out, out damned ink blot ... slings and arrows of outrageous box ticking ... how weary stale, flat and unprofitable seems to me all the form filling in this world ... that sort of thing! A plague on all their houses! Sorry about that but I feel much better now!

An honourable profession indeed. Excellent set Richard... I live in horse country and a good blacksmith is worth his/her weight in gold around around here!
Cheers Walt
