Great Spotted Woodpecker

By Mike_Smith
Thank you for all your C & Cs on my previous picture, today i have a Great Spotted Woodpecker i took earlier this week, one of my favorite birds these, they are great to watch.

About blackbird-sized and striking black-and-white. It has a very distinctive bouncing flight and spends most of its time clinging to tree trunks and branches, often trying to hide on the side away from the observer. Its presence is often announced by its loud call or by its distinctive spring 'drumming' display. The male has a distinctive red patch on the back of the head and young birds have a red crown.

Great sharp shot of it and beautiful background too Smile

Now my mum is the one with the green fingers and she recently told me that Clematis needs well-drained soil and one should water it only when the soil is dry. As they hate being waterlogged. Your mention of 'clematis wilt' got me thinking perhaps your soil is retaining too much water? If it's in a pot, pour some water and see how quickly the water drains out the pot.

Also, I was told that Clematis dies back after a while. And even though it looks like the plant is dead, leave it. It'll grow back.

A high class capture of this lovely woodland bird Mike. Excellent exposure and as sharp as a new pin.GrinGrinGrinGrinGrinGrin
I hope you wont mind but I did just wonder if the image really needs all that empty space to the rear of the bird. I imagine you did it in an attempt to take the bird 'off centre' and move it into the 'thirds'. It appears to me that the quality of exposure on the bird is so good that you could give it much more emphasis by cropping away about half that left side and possibly even turn it into portrait format. Puts the bird in the middle I agree but so what ? Rules are meant for guidance only not rigid adherance.
I must stress these are my thoughts only and in no way a criticism of this fine shot.

Lovely shot Mike, they are special birds aren't they! I agree with Ryan and Ron about cropping, a square format would work nicely here.

A superb capture, Mike. Pin sharp. Excellent detail and texture on this pretty bird and the tree trunk. Background is nicely o.o.f. IMHO a square crop right side would raise this beautiful image to superlative status. Even so, as it is, still is ACE - goes on my shortlist SmileSmileSmile
