Being hopeless at insect ID, I'm afraid I cannot help there, Carol, but I can appreciate your capture in these two shots.
With the more vertical orientation in V 1, it looks as if it's hanging on for dear life, and as you remark, it's those green iridescent eyes that attract attention.

It does look very similar to our horseflies or deer flies with those iridescent green eyes, so maybe it is a Mediterranean cousin - a donkey fly perchance! Lovely portraits.
