Grey Heron with Lunch

By dewie
I was in the two-storey hide at the LWT with a wildlife filmmaker. There was a heron about 40m away and it was continually being chased away by a coot and a female pochard. The Poachard had about 5 ducklings.

However, this was to no avail as the heron came back and plucked one of the ducklings from the water, before proceeding to fly across the lagoon past the hide where it went behind some reeds so I could not see it devour it.

Although sad to see, this is why the ducks lay so many eggs as they know that only a small percentage will survive due to predation by herons and gulls and foxes, and other reasons. It is how life is for them.

Hope you like it!

Oh!!! That is so sad!! Yes, I know it's nature. Sad You have managed to capture it very well though, the panning is brilliant and the Heron is beautifully sharp.

That's really sad to see Oscar, but as Karen said, nature must do what it must, and sadly this is one of the things. After all, for the herons it's not sad, if they didn't have it they would starve to death - and that's sad too Sad

Anyway, it's extremely well panned and sharp, and I think you've caught the moment extremely well.
