GWR Double Crossing...

By Paulmayo21
GWR 4900 Class 4953 Pitchford Hall & GWR 6959 Class 6990 Witherslack Hall both working well across Swithland Viaduct on the Great Central Main Line over Swithland Reservoir It is unusual in that it carries the line over a reservoir rather than a valley. It actually consists of two separate viaducts, with an embankment over Brazil Island in the centre of the reservoir. The line now carries the Great Central Railway....

4953 Pitchford Hall Built at Swindon Works in August 1929 for a cost of £4375, the locomotive worked from a wide variety of sheds all over the GWR network, until withdrawal by British Railways in May 1963. It covered 1,344,464 miles over that period. Acquired by Woodham Brothers scrapyard in Barry, Vale of Glamorgan, South Wales in October 1963, currently at Great Central Railway seen here at the winter gala

6990 Witherslack Hall is a steam locomotive. It was built at Swindon by British Railways to a Great Western Railway design in 1948. It took part in the 1948 Locomotive Trials, on 24th and 25 June 1948, running on the Great Central Main Line from Marylebone. Now works regular return services from Loughborough Central to Leicester North Stations

A lovely shot that takes me back many years to my ‘train spotting’ days.
Just something special about the ‘days of steam’.
