Hair

By IamDora
In the Caribbean town of Cahuita, this lovely young girl is famous for her hair. There may be hairspray involved because her hair does sparkle.

V1 is the original photo.

The Caribbean side of Costa Rica is a very different culture. The towns of Cahuita and Puerto Viejo de Talamanca are populated by those descendants of African settlers; dreadlocks and colourful clothing and calypso music. Unfortunately it is also where the young set go for surfing, partying and drugs. It is close to the Panama border and drugs make their way up from Columbia, through Panama to that remote corner of Costa Rica. In better days, I lived for a while in both Cahuita and Puerto Viejo and it is one of my favourite parts of Costa Rica but I haven't been there for three or four years because it has become a little too dangerous.

Thank you for the mod. I tried a lighter, more angelic version but lost the point of the photo which is her hair. It is always interesting to see what the rest have to say.

What a lovely child. I can't imagine the screaming when her mother tries to brush her hair. You'd never get a comb through it. I like what you've done in the b&w Dora.

A beautiful expression.

It's so difficult to know what to expect. My son is mixed race and as a child he used to have adorable ringlets that fell across his forehead. He got into Cambridge University and when he first went there was rarther withrawn and lacking in self confidence, had his hair very short and kept quiet about being into rugby league not rugby union. When he got to his last year he seemed to decide it was time for a change and had a big afro (on top of his 6 foot 4 inch hight) and wore his 'Wire' top around the town. You could spot him from way off.

Colour for me Dora. Plus, the composition shows more of the hair for which she is famous for.

Colour for me because it shows her hair off more. Lovely portrait Dora.

A very pleasing image Dora. I think that the colour version is preferable.

It's great to see them emerge and accept who they are. At home we have such a fantastic representation of so many cultures and encouragement to maintain their culture that no one blinks an eye at an afro or anything else.

Thank you for your time and interest.
I liked the colour version as well but the point of the exercise was learning to do a mono conversion.
I debated on the darker version but felt it took too much away from her hair although it certainly enhances her face.
What a delightful little girl. Her smile is as stunning as her hair. Itís colour for me where I feel she has more sparkle.

Well, first I don't have Adobe Photoshop or any of similar high end software on this laptop. I have Photoscape Pro. I am also working on a 13 inch laptop monitor but It's a Macbook Air so the colour is reasonably good. So that said: I go one of two ways. First one is I do the gradient map and then play around with selective colour, colour balance and hue/saturation (as advised by Robert (Robert51). The second way is I play with selective colour, colour balance and hue.saturation while still in colour. Then I do the "black and white" which has sliders for red, yellow, green, cyan, blue and magentia. When I finish with either one of these, I go to gamma and nudge that around if it's needed; then to light and dark highlights and see if anything is improved there. Then I go do something else for an hour or so and comeback and see if I still like what I've got. I'm concentrating on faces just now although I've tried some others. I did a woman, a man and this was an attempt at a child's face. Carole did a much lighter version; you did darker. I wanted the hair to really stand out so I stayed in the middle. Thank you in advance for any advice you might offer. Dora
