Handful of Chains

By heyitshenry
Hello there,
I was helping my friend with a photo shoot for our school photography assessment, I'm just wondering if there is anyway this picture could be stronger or if there is anything at all you might change?
Anything I should look for?

Hi Henry,
Your subject is nicely focussed and exposed.
There is lots of negative space, was that part of the assessment ? If not, in order to 'tell a story' there has to be some connection somewhere. The finger is what ? Maybe you could have included something else in the frame for it to point to that would connect with the finger or indeed the chain.
If the negative space was part of the plan then for me there is too much for me maybe a crop would help to put the emphasis on the hand/chain much more.
I will have a go at a mod for you.

I have done 2 mods.
Flipped the image as 'normally' we would view from left to right.
Adjusted & brightened levels on the bg.
Added something for the finger to point to...I know a wasp isn't quite the right thing but perhaps it gives you a basic idea. I just dropped an image of the wasp on & set the mode to darken.
Mod 2 has a texture layer added to the above, not for any particular reason though Smile
'A handful of chains' perhaps needs more chains, like loads !!
I see this as a base image to play with, unless of course the assessment prevents that.

Unless you are purposely using negative space, 'fill the frame' is a pretty good motto.

Minimum focus distance may be a factor, of course - though if you use the lens at the longest setting this is not too big a factor. 55mm is your best focal length for this sort of thing, I reckon.

Nicely shot, well exposed and sharp, and settings used are fine.

but yes I'd like to see it larger in frame too. That would be the 'stronger' you're looking for, a bolde visual statement which I think a lot of negative space will dilute. Some subjects have more impact with a lot of space, nost don't. You can always try both and compare at your leisure.

Anything else to look for. Well, you could consider a dark background with directional lighting perhaps, for a more moody approach. It depends on what mood or feeling you want to portray, or if there were any stipulations on the assignment.
With such strong shapes and simple composition mono is also to be considered, if that,s allowed in your assignment though you could do that anyway just for youirself.

I immediately wanted to see something hanging from the chain, like a large pendant or an old pocket watch.
If the pendant were something like a religious cross, it would give added interest. I also think a watch would be eye-catching. Both of these things carry connotations with them, so then the pointing finger might be tied in with such connotations. These particular items are simply suggestions.

As to that pointing finger, I'm not entirely sure that you meant it to be seen as such, but that perhaps the hand was simply opened to keep the chain from falling. What the viewer reads into an image is extremely important, and that's what holds the viewer's attention.
