Happy Runner

By Jacobite
This young lady was one of about 24 female runners who took part in the annual Olney Pancake Race.

The race has its origins back in 1445 when a local housewife was late for the Shriving Service at the church and ran there with her frying pan and pancake.

The race covers 415 yards, from the Bull Pub to the Church and was won this year by 18 year old Devon Byrne in 58.5 seconds.
The race always starts at 11.55hrs on Shrove Tuesday and is mirrored in Liberal, Kansas, USA; this year, for the first time since 2006, Olney had the fastest time.

All competitors, in the adult race, have to be female and to have lived in Olney for 3 years. There are a number of shorter runs for local schoolchildren, both girls and boys.
