Heath Fritillary on Pyramidal Orchid

By fishiee
Another from Provence 2010. Found a little spot with a handful of these just a short walk from where I stay. One of the few times I've found a butterfly settled on an orchid. You can't see it in this image, but there is actuallyone of the pollen sacks from the orchid stuck to it's proboscis. I had heard about this before but never actually seen it until this trip. In fact I found several butterflies of different species with these, so proves they feed on the orchids.

Excellently captured as usual John, the orchid certainly makes a beautiful perch.
