Hele Bay

By AlexandraSD
I own a little Nissan Micra, 1.2L engine, not a turbo in sight... So the drive from Dunster to Hele was a bit scary going up those steep hills, it climbs 1300 feet in less than 2 miles, so thats me in second gear, leaning forward to make the car go uphill, forcing every drop of meagre power from its puny little engine!

But it was worth the effort because the views from that road are stunning! This was taken near the end of my drive along that road, passing Porlock and Lynmouth and reaching the highest cliffs in England and a bit further still. Hele was the last town I visited that morning, and it was well worth it, though, true to its name, it didnt have a cafe or anywhere to get a decent cupper where the phrase "Welcome to hell! has never been so apt, specially on a day where it was 30 degrees by 11am!

A fun hill, that one... But truly scary coming down it. Porlock is often full of clutch and brake fumes - clutches of those going up who try to change down too late for the hairpins: and brakes of those who don't keep things in check as they go...
