I know what you mean about needing some ummphh in certian shots.
Zoo's and safari parks can be difficult places to get any type of reasonable shot. Here the fence and the road within the BG distract massively from the composition. However, more often then not your not in a position to change these factors. I imagine this was the case here and if so you've made a reasonable stab of making the most of a bad job (you can't walk in the enclosure and shout here kitty now can you!). That said an angle slightly to the left would have helped isolate the head from the tree.
Other than composition the image lacks contrast (or at least it does on my monitor). I've added a mod using a single curves adjustment layer to add contrast. Simply drag the line in the curves dialog into a slight s shape and keep a careful eye on the preview as not to over cook things. In this case it doesn't give that wow factor, but does add a little punch.

Hello, Rob. It's a nice capture and the lion is beautifully relaxed and still. At least there aren't any fences or obvious signs of captivity, and I quite like the depth provided by the trees and house in the background. As I see it, there is just too much background in the image and therefore the focus of attention is not immediately upon the animal.
I have done a modification in an attempt to get some sort of "wow" factor for you. Firstly, I did a drastic crop, which has obviously reduced the pixels an awful lot, so I hope your original is much bigger. I've left some of the trees in the background, adjusted highlights/shadows, cloned out the two buildings immediately behind the lion, and used the burn tool on the light blue running across the image (?water) because it was a bit too light. Just a little contrast adjustment and a sharpen to finish. Perhaps not dynamic, but hope it helps.
