Heroes Square Memorial

By hrsimages
From dawn till dusk, two soldiers are on duty at the Heroes Square memorial in Tbilisi built to honour the memory of more than 4,000 Georgian soldiers (and students) lost in various conflicts between 1921 and 2008. This period spans resistance efforts against the Red army following invasion of the country in 1921 and throughout the Stalin era up to more recent civil and ethnic conflicts. The latter have occurred following Georgia’s restoration of independence from the Soviet Union in 1991. Most recently was the Russo-Georgian war of 2008, regarded as the first European war of the 21st century. It resulted in the loss of two large areas of Georgian territory, South Ossetia and Abkhazia, to Russian backed separatists.
