High tech 1929 camera

By HobbitDave
Thanks very much for the kind comments on my last upload of vintage Zeiss cameras.
Thought I'd put one more up - nearly 90 years old
The camera is an Ensign Tropical Roll Film camera, very much the bees knees of its day.
Despite having a sharp British Ross lens, it only had two shutter speeds, 'Instant', and 'TIme exposure'. This particular version was made for the more affluent, out of teakwood and brass - teak was used so that the camera could be used in hot countries without splitting, as the wood has a low coefficient of expansion. The top unfolds, and the image is viewed vertically through a morrocan leather extended view chamber. A black version of the same camera with a leather covering, considerably less expensive at the time, was made for use in Britain, (one of those not very hot countries so cheaper wood was OK to use).
Having refurbished this one it eventually found a home in America. (Nice to work on, too expensive for me to keep Wink

Looks quite compact, on viewing V4. How photography has come along since this was made! Smile A fine piece of work, well shown off in this set, Dave, and interesting write-up too Smile

Hello Dave,

Your background info breathes full life into these views of a true old gem. 'Tropics Version' is certainly a demanding equipment standard to meet. Now if only Panasonic could whip up a ' freezing WX' version of our FZ1000s. TG
