Hinton Ampner Urn

By pamelajean
This is detail from an ormolu-mounted Egyptian porphyry covered urn, reflected in a background mirror, from Hinton Ampner house.

The stone Imperial Red Porphyry was first discovered in Egypt in the year 18 CE by the Roman legionnaire, Caius Cominius Leugas. It is rare, valuable and has historic significance.

Hinton Ampner house in Hampshire was completely destroyed by fire in 1960, along with Ralph Duttonīs collections of fine English furniture and Italian paintings. Rather than abandon the ruin, he set about building a new house, an elegant country manor modelled and immaculately decorated in the Georgian style.
His collection of hard stone, marble, and rare and highly prized minerals is a joy to behold and admire.

Pamela.

I hope there are wealthy collectors around nowadays, willing to spend a fortune on rare stone and craftsmanship rather than indoor heated pools and gyms. I'm not sure though. This has the leisurely feel of a much earlier age.

I love the way that you have captured both the ornamentation of the urn and it's reflection in the mirror. Well though out POV.
