Holy Rood Church 1

By pamelajean
(Continuing my Southampton series).

In this archway is a Chancel Screen, located within the ruined walls of Holy Rood Church in Southampton.
Holy Rood Church was probably built before 1066 and rebuilt in the 1320s.

After destruction by bombing in 1940 the church ruins became a memorial to Merchant Navy seafarers and those who lost their lives at sea, and in 1957, the ruins of the church were scheduled as an ancient monument.
It’s known as ‘The Church of The Sailors’, and preserved by the people of Southampton as a memorial garden of rest.

I will be showing you some closer pictures of the screen later.

Thank you for looking, for your interest, your comments and votes on my Star Hotel pictures.

Looking forward to more, Pamela. I love the screen with its doves, but I've found it very difficult to photograph!

It's very lovely, Pamela, and I love the wibbly-wobbly curves of the railings and gate! 😃👍🏻
