Holy Rood Church 4

By pamelajean
(Continuing and also concluding my Southampton series. The Old Town has over 90 listed buildings and more than 30 ancient monuments, with medieval wine vaults, an array of medieval churches, and fine Georgian houses and hotels).

In the corner of the former nave is an anchor behind which is a plaque bearing the legend.
The Plaque states – “The church of Holy Rood erected on this site in 1320 was damaged by enemy action on 30 Nov 1940. Known for centuries as the Church of the Sailors the ruins have been preserved by the people of Southampton as a memorial garden of rest. Dedicated to those who served in the merchant navy and lost their lives at sea”.

2 images, the version is a close-up showing a bit of detail of the anchor.

Grateful thanks to those of you who were interested enough in my previous images of this church to leave your kind votes and comments.

Pamela.

Two good images, and the lead is a fitting tribute to the sailors involved, who gave the ultimate sacrifice in the wars. Nice narrative to go with it, Pamela, and it has been an interesting series on Southampton.

A splendid, dramatic memorial beautifully captured by you. Love the way that the carefully selected POV In your opener enables the anchor to frame the plaque but leave it readable.

I always think it's particularly sad when something that has been around for hundreds of years gets damaged or destroyed in wars 😳 two wonderful images here, Pamela 😃👍🏻
