Holyrood Rowan

By pamelajean
Still in Southampton, these 2 image (taken from slightly different angles) were taken at Holyrood Church, which I have featured before.

After destruction by bombing in 1940 the ruins of the church were restored and dedicated as a memorial to Merchant Navy seafarers, and scheduled as an ancient monument, now known as “The Church of The Sailors”.

Mythology and symbolism:-
The colour red was considered to be the best colour for fighting evil, and so the rowan, with its bright red berries, has long been associated with magic and witches.
In Ireland it was planted near houses to protect them against spirits, and in Wales rowan trees were planted in churchyards. Cutting down a rowan was considered taboo in Scotland.

Thank you for looking, for your interest, your comments, votes and awards on my Clematis.

Pamela.

Two gorgeous images. It's remarkable how the red stands out to such an extent that it appears 3D. In some ways it takes me back to the old days of Kodachrome 25 slide film; the reds in particular seemed to hover above the surface of the slide when looked at in a slide viewer. (That was in the days when I wore a stove pipe hat and a frock coat!).

Lead image for me - those berries really ' pop ' out of the composition.
I see you got a magpie in the scene too.Smile

Wonderful looking lead Pamela. When I was in the scouts in the early '50s we would parade there on Remembrance Sunday.

Love the way that the red berries stand out against the gentle colours of the church building.

Here I thought This tree was named after Rowan Atkinson , until upon closer inspection realized it was what we call a mountain ash in North America .
All kidding aside this is a beautiful composition Pamela.

A well chosen pov in the lead, those red berries show up so well against the colour of the stone work.
