‘Home to Roost’
The last of the daylight touches everything with a soft gold colouring as the Mustang squadrons recover to their Cambridge bases. The central aircraft, appropriately named ‘Twilight Tears’, heading for Duxford is accompanied by other squadron ships from Debden and Bottisham - USAF 8th AF bases all within a few miles of each other. At the height of the aerial onslaught on Europe there were some 70 operational airbases in this small area of England each with a usual complement of four squadrons, involved in the USAF 8th Air Force operations.
The Bottisham P51, yellow nose, is closely herded by a ‘friend’ as it struggles with a failing engine - all in all an everyday occurrence in the heart of ‘Bomber Country’. The other ships from 83, 84, 334 and 374 squadrons make their individual way ’home’.
