Hook Head Lighthouse

By mauriceegan
This is Hook Head lighthouse located in county Wexford in the southeast corner of Ireland. It is the oldest operational lighthouse in the world and has stood on this spot since the 13th century. I visited there at the weekend and it is a fascinating place and well worth a visit. I hadn't time to do the tour of the lighthouse but I must come back when I have more time and do that. This place is also credited as on of the origins of the phrase in the English language " By hook or by Crook" The story goes that when Oliver Cromwell won the civil war in England in the 1640's the Royalist forces still controlled Ireland and this was unacceptable to Cromwell so he set about invading Ireland. His forces suffered a setback close to Hook head where his flagship was sunk due to enemy action. Undeterred Cromwell stated that he would take Ireland by "Hook or By Crook" Crooke happens to be another village close to Hook head on the western side of the river Suir estuary and this allegedly is one of the sources of the phrase.
