Hoping for a Win!

Grandson in action on a soft toy crane machine with mirror glass back. Not sure about this one. Tried it before a few times with better results I think.

Treated myself to the faster better quality standard zoom, although I see no image quality difference as yet!
The wider maximum aperture is helpful for shots such as this though.

I remember the older one, was a little better. This is decent though, such concentration!

I like it. Mod uploaded with just a few suggestions.

I cropped tighter to place the 'real' grandson off-centre, a suggested presence, a spectator like me, rather than a whole blurred head blocking my route into the scene. Keeping more or less your proportions, that gets rid of distractions top and bottom too.

I skewed bottom left out slightly and made a 2% correction of barrel distortion. Just for the formality of the frame on the left.

I lightened shadows, darkened highlights, just by a few % and did some gentle burning on the display and the face.

Oh and I got rid of your reflected hand top left.

I might go for a square, just because...

Nothing to add, really - Moira's crops both work, and the second, tighter one is better, though it may be too much for hte more conventionally-minded. Opposing corners work well...

It's sharp and well lit but Wrongly timed/framed for me Paul. Moira's mods do not work either, the crops, sensible as they may be, fail to contain the mechanic arm that tries to grab the toy and separate this from a toy display. I would have waited to shoot when the mechanic arm lowers. The facial expression would be far moire intense then.

Mixed views. I like the tighter crop in many ways - concentrates the eye and I am, as you know, a great believer in fill the frame! However, the crops do remove some explanatory detail - the crane. I did get a couple with the crane grab down, but not quite as sharp. Try again.

A thought...

The crane is an essential part of the real story, the one you witnessed.

But there's a different story with no trace of it, about dreaming, longing, reflecting. And that's strong enough on its own, I think.

I can see that, John. Longing for the toy regardless of method.
