Hornet Hoverfly

By barrywebb
This Hornet Hoverfly (Volucella zonaria) was taken a couple of weeks ago in the garden. I was convinced it was a hornet when it was in flight but when it landed on a bramble flower to feed I realised what it was. I managed to grab this shot before it flew off. A while later it returned and landed on a leaf right next to me! It stayed longer and I was able to get more shots (see version). The Hornet mimic Hoverfly is the largest in Britain.

Beautifully detailed image Barry the colours are beautiful.

Many years ago before I was on this earth my Dad and my Mums brother were walking down a country lane,
Look Les my Uncle Jim cried theres a Bees nest hanging in that tree.
Approaching it my Uncle Jim decided in his infinite wisdom to poke it with his stick my Dad shouted no but to late was the cry and out shot not bees but hornets at the point both of them hi tailed down the lane realising
They were not going to make it from the angry swarm they both dived into a very convenient ditch which was full of water.
Thankfully the swarm passed on by however trouble was awaiting when they got back covered in mud and wet through sympathy was not forthcoming.

The morel of the story is donít innocent looking poke objects with sticks unless you have a very
quick pair of heels.
