Hi John and welcome to EPZ and the Critique Gallery,

What a nice image, nice composition and a nice sharp hoverfly. The background is nicely out of focus and the DoF is great, I especially like the hairs on the leaves.

I think if I were to offer any of my advice it would be to just get a little lower and around to the right a little to get more of the fly's face and eyes into the shot. Also I might have been tempted to just clone out those dots of colour on the background as they might just draw away the eye. Otherwise, nice image.

Please enter more camera details for future shots as it helps when offering critique. You could also add a bit more in the description about what you were trying to achieve, whether you got what you wanted etc.

Hope this helps

Welcome!

This is a lovely shot, with great detail on the fly and the foliage. On the one hand, it would be nice to have the fly closer to an intersection of thirds but, on the other hand moving him right and either up or down would lose some of those wonderful furry leaves. He's facing down and the to the right and there's a reasonable amount of space in that direction so I think the composition you have works.

I do find the shot is rather dark, though. Indeed, the laptop I'm using at the moment tends to make photos look over-exposed but this one still looks dark! A peek at the histogram shows that 95% of the image is below two-thirds brightness and there aren't any true whites, even in the white areas of the flower. I've posted a mod where I've used a levels adjustment to make the whites white and a curves adjustment to lighten other areas of the image.

A nice image, very well done. Not too bothered about composition here - you are off centre - it doesn't have to be spot on a third for me. The Hoverfly is possibly a tiny bit dark, but not much.
